Reel Rush Review
What do you get when you combine nostalgic video game visuals and a novel slot idea? You get Reel Rush; a game still actively played even after all these years.
How does it hold up after all these years? Join us on our journey to find out.
- 962.4x jackpot
- Consecutive wins unlock additional reel positions
- Gorgeous art design
Nostalgia is a powerful thing. The desire to go back when things were simpler is something everyone feels at some point. That is exactly what this release taps into.
The blocky visuals gives an obvious Mario Bros vibe. NetEnt could have used this as an opportunity to offer us a lazy gameplay loop.
Instead, they tried something novel! Available special features include different reel configurations, free spins and re-spins.
Theme, Graphics and Sounds
While the developers take obvious inspiration from old games, they do not settle on being second best. A lot of effort has gone into the background.
The blocky shapes do not feel hastily put together. Instead, different shrubs and mushrooms are scattered across the image.
Reel Rush has fun with the idea of a blocky world. Have you ever seen a lemon square? Neither did we until we played this slot.
You play this release on a five-reel, three-row board. However, the entire playing field is not open from the start.
You start with a 1-3-5-3-1 layout, which gradually unlocks as you land consecutive wins. You start with 45 ways to win, and can reach a maximum of 3125 ways to win.
Wins are granted by finding three or more matching symbols in adjacent positions, starting with the leftmost reel.
How do you go about unlocking the playing field? Different reel configurations become available as you take advantage of the re-spins bonus.
After a win, a few positions on the playing field will unlock. The reels spin again, now with more ways to win available.
If you win again, you get another re-spin. If not, the re-spins end, and you return to the starting reel configuration.
Players get five re-spins total. Scoring a win on each re-spin unlocks more positions on the playing field.
In order to fully unlock the playing field and get 3125 ways to win, you need to win all five re-spins. Difficult to achieve, but well worth the trouble.
Free spins are not granted using Scatters or other bonus icons. Instead, winning after the fifth re-spin is played will grant eight free spins.
That means free spins are played with 3125 ways to win. You cannot win additional free spins while the bonus is being played. After all eight free spins are played, we return to the initial reel configuration.
Where To Play Reel Rush?
RTP, bet sizes and volatility
The RTP for Reel Rush is 96.96%. This is almost a whole percentage point above the current industry average of 96%. As such, this slot has one of the highest RTPs among NetEnt titles.
You can bet between $0.50 and $100 on each spin. High rollers and mid-range players will not have any issues with this spread of wagers.
However, casual punters may find $0.50 as a minimum bet to be too restricting. You change your stake by adjusting the bet level and coin value.
The top prize you can win in this game is 962.4x your total stake. This is an okay jackpot, and was what we expected given the release’s medium variance.
If you are on the hunt for life-changing jackpots, this is not the title for you!
We are happy to report Reel Rush remains fun despite its age. Other software providers have iterated on the idea in the years since.
NetEnt themselves followed up on it with Reel Rush 2! However, the original has a certain charm that you cannot find anywhere else.
We rate the slot 4 out of 5 stars. Still well worth your time, even though it has a few odd design choices.
