Mayhem Review

Post-apocalyptic slots are becoming an increasingly recurring theme across the industry. There is something attractive in thrilling sequences located across Mad Max-like wastelands while you are hunting hefty wins.

ELK’s Nitropolis 3 has recently achieved great success, prompting other studios to try and do the same. Red Tiger has attempted to replicate the effect with the appropriately titled Mayhem, but it succeeded only to an extent.

It is indubitably a game that has plenty to offer, with several characteristics that, unfortunately, dull its blade. It has grand ambitions, but it does not reach the desired heights. Let’s see what’s in it for the punters.

  • Highly volatile slot maxing out at 1,200x the bet
  • Twenty ways to win
  • Cash Queen and Anarchy Spins

The graphics are crisp and sharp but expectedly unpolished, resembling the 90s cartoons and giving a unique vibe to the game. You cannot expect spick-and-span visuals from a “dirty“ online slot, so everything looks fantastic.

Mayhem is visually appealing and sports an enjoyable soundtrack, offering an outstanding presentation altogether. You can almost anticipate everything you will get in this game, and that is not bad, but it lacks a touch of originality to pack a punch.

It has only a few features, but they are engaging enough to keep you on the edge of your seat. This game is thoroughly entertaining, if only for a short while. Do you have what it takes to survive in such a dangerous environment?

Theme, Graphics and Sounds

The graphics are perfectly appropriate for this kind of slot, reminding players of retro 90s cartoons we all adored. They fit the post-apocalyptic environment the game is located in so well, with thrilling sequences that deliver a memorable playing experience.

The soundtrack is as loud as it should be and highly evocative, drawing inspiration from the George Miller films we all know and love. Contrary to its title, Mayhem does not go all over the place, choosing to exploit only a couple of features.

It would have been a perfect choice if the game had more to offer. It has plenty to show for it, but a couple of drawbacks seriously hamper its quality.

The action plays out on a standard 5×3 game board with twenty paylines. If three to five matching symbols appear on a single line, you will score a win using nine icons in the paytable.

The lower end belongs to royals (10-A), awarding negligible amounts from 0.1x to 1.5x the bet for five of a kind. Moreover, the high-paying symbols include Lips, Grenades, Helmets and Crowned Dollars. They grant 0.4x-7.5x the stake for the same string.

Furthermore, the icons in the game include the Cash Queen Wild and the Scatter symbol, each triggering its own feature.

The latter helps the players enter the Bonus round. Multiple scoring opportunities are in store for you, but it would help if they were more lucrative.

Mayhem offers a lot of good things, providing a great experience, but it has the problems that prevent it from becoming an all-time classic.

Mayhem Free Spins

In-game features

The lady that looks like Harley Quinn’s twin represents Mayhem’s Cash Queen Wild symbol. She is a 1×3 icon that can appear only on the third reel and replaces all the regular icons in creating winning combinations.

The Queen always lands in full view and locks in place when part of a winning combo. All the winning symbols also remain locked on the reels, while the remaining icons respin.

The symbols are locked again if the respin brings more wins, awarding a new respin. The process ends when no winning icons land or the entire grid is filled.

Mayhem Free Spins

Anarchy Free Spins symbols appear on the odd-numbered reels, awarding ten spins if you land three of them simultaneously. During the whole Bonus round, the Cash Queen remains locked on the middle reel, triggering a respin every time you land a win.

When the first round of spins finishes, the Queen symbol acquires an x2 Multiplier that is applied to all wins throughout the Bonus round.

The Multiplier increases by +1 after every respin sequence to follow, growing up to x10. Finally, each Bonus symbol landing during the round adds an extra spin to the remaining tally.

RTP, bet sizes and volatility

The game’s RTP amounts to 95.71%, going slightly below the industry average but with a solid hit frequency.

Its value has not been announced yet, but it is marked 5/5, signifying a solid rate. Multiple winning chances are around the corner for you. Given the rest of the parameters, they could also be pretty lucrative.

Various wagering options are there for the punters, starting at $0.10 as the lowest value you can place. In addition, the highest bet you can lay stands at $100. The game will surely attract daredevils and penny-pinchers alike with such a broad betting range.

Seasoned and recreational players will be delighted if they are into post-apocalyptic slot releases. Everyone who tries the game will have a great time, no matter how short it might be.

The game is highly volatile (marked 4/5), signifying less frequent but more lucrative wins. Mayhem has many elements that might have made it an all-time classic, but a measly maximum potential win of 1,200x the stake hinders the game significantly.

The gameplay is pretty repetitive, with one feature in the base game leaving much to be desired. The Bonus round is the most exciting part that provides thrilling sequences, but the game needed an extra spark to shine.

Mayhem Bonus

Verdict

Even though Mayhem has many great elements, we cannot help but wonder what it would be like with a few tweaks. Low payout potential destroys the chance for glory, and the gameplay is not too innovative.

Some games profit from relying only on a feature or two, but a game that tends to be chaotic should take more risks. Albeit Mayhem is far from a bad game, we think it could have been a lot better. Hence, our rating is 3 out of 5 stars.
