Hypernova Megaways Review
ReelPlay, an Australian online casino content provider, has not managed to establish a front-running market position over the last few years. The company tries to change things for the better by introducing Megaways slots, known to do good for developers in general.
Hypernova Megaways is the enterprise’s first attempt at creating a Megaways slot that will rock the market. It is an intergalactic adventure that offers multiple surprises, but an all-time classic it is not.
While the ideas are cool and the appearance is fantastic, the gameplay is too generic for such a theme. Let’s dive into this space travel quest and see what’s in it for the punters.
- Medium volatility game with a maximum win of 8,640x the stake
- 117,649 paylines
- Cascading Reels, Jackpot Respins, and four fixed Jackpots
The graphics are crisp and sharp, with the visual aspect being the game’s greatest asset. In addition, the soundtrack complements the graphics nicely, evoking the atmosphere of the familiar space adventures we know and love.
The entire presentation looks and sounds fantastic, but the online slot slightly falters in the gameplay section. We do not say the features are not attractive, but we have seen them already, and more exciting games put them to better use.
It is safe to say Hypernova did not fulfil the expectations one naturally has from a Megaways slot. However, it does have elements with plenty to show for it, but it is a shame it did not use all its potential.
Theme, Graphics and Sounds
The theme calls for the graphics to be stunning to leave an impression, and Hypernova Megaways is up to the task. A supernova and neon lights provide a colourful background, creating a visual experience resembling shots from 2001 by Stanley Kubrick.
Add one of the most impressive soundtracks across the industry to the mix, and you will have an audio-visual masterpiece.
It sets the standard pretty high from the beginning, but we, unfortunately, do not get the same from the gameplay. If it had been on the same level, we would have talked about an all-time classic that other similar games would have hardly surpassed.
The action plays out on a regular Megaways six-reel grid with 117,649 paylines to boot. If you hit three to six matching symbols on a single payline, you will grab yourself a win.
The paytable begins with six golden royals (9-A), paying 0.5x-1.2x the stake for a six-of-a-kind win. The three Gems are premium symbols, awarding you 2x, 2.5x, and 5x the bet.
Moreover, a Diamond is the most lucrative regular symbol, paying 100x the stake for six in a string. It is the only icon to pay for two on a payline.
A Wild symbol appears only on the top reel to replace all the regular symbols in winning combinations. Scatters activate the Jackpot Respins game, opening multiple winning possibilities. Everyone will find something to like, if only for a short while.
Cascading Reels are a staple for all the Megaways slots, with every winning symbol exploding and vanishing from the screen. Other icons fall into their places, creating new winning opportunities, with the process continuing until no winning combos remain.
Winning repeatedly on a single spin is always great, as Megaways lovers are already used to. Furthermore, six or more Scatter icons on the reels trigger the Jackpot Respin feature that enters the fray carrying three respins.
Supernova Scatters remain in positions, while the other ones respin, resetting the tally to three with every new Scatter. The round is completed when you run out of respins or fill the entire grid with Scatters.
Each Scatter awards the player with the value attached to it upon completing the feature, ranging from 1x to 100x. One of the four Jackpot prizes might also come along.
They include a Bronze, a Silver, a Gold, and a Platinum Jackpot, worth 10x, 50x, 250x, and 2,000x the stake, respectively.
Hypernova Megaways Free Spins
The guys from ReelPlay did an utterly incredible thing for a Megaways slot, leaving out the Free Spins round.
A regular Bonus round would be an immeasurable improvement for the game that suffers from being repetitive more than anything else. It would not have to be particularly innovative, only to cover some loose ends and provide some more scoring chances.
However, the company missed the opportunity to capitalize on the world-class audio-visual presentation and decent payout potential of 8,640x the stake. It remains one of the bigger what-ifs in the history of Megaways slots.
Where To Play Hypernova Megaways?
RTP, bet sizes and volatility
The game’s RTP amounts to 96.09%, going slightly above the industry standard. The hit frequency rate is not announced, but we assume it is not bad given the parameters.
There are multiple wagering options, starting at $0.4, with the highest value you can lay amounting to $25. High rollers and penny-pinchers alike will be pleased with the broad betting range. Set your preferences and enjoy the game with up to 1,000 autospins to boot.
Hypernova Megaways is a medium-high volatility game that lacks the usual adrenaline-rushing sequences for which Megaways slots are famous.
The game offers various engaging perks, but the lack of a genuine Free Spins round seriously hinders the gameplay. It could have easily been a minor classic with an improvement or two.
Hypernova Megaways is a beautiful-looking slot whose gameplay, unfortunately, does not justify its world-class appearance. This slot is among the weakest Megaways titles ever produced, and we hope the developer will improve its offering in the future.
There are a couple of excellent features, but nothing we have not seen already. It is a shame the gameplay is not in the same league as the game’s audio-visual presentation or even payout potential.
It needed a regular Free Spins round to come close to becoming a minor classic. It did not happen, so we rated it 3 out of 5 stars.
