Bust the Bank Review
A lot of planning goes into breaking into a bank. It is not just enough to barge in with a mask on and demand the cash.
You need to source the explosives, prepare a getaway vehicle and make sure the law does not catch you! Will Bust the Bank be able to pull this off successfully?
- Old Microgaming classic
- Medium variance, 450x jackpot
- Several fun and simple bonuses
Some online slots need no introduction, and this is one of them! This game was one of the biggest launches when it first came out.
It spawned numerous spiritual successors, who all hoped to capture its charm for themselves. We have to admit, the title held up quite well visually given its age.
However, numerous fun special features complement those charming graphics and make this release as fun as it is. They also appear quite frequently, giving you plenty of opportunities to win that 450x jackpot.
Theme, Graphics and Sounds
Bust the Bank’s theme is very much obvious from its name. It is all about breaking into a bank and making off with a whole lot of moolah.
Symbol designs reflect this perfectly. There are no lazy playing card royals here. Everything is tied into the theme to some degree.
The icons are full of charm, and are bound to evoke a slight laugh from you when their animations play. The fact the visuals still look good so many years later is testament to the talent of Microgaming’s artists.
You play this slot on a five-reel, three-row board with 243 ways to win. This system abandons paylines in order to make forming wins easier.
Players only need three or more matching symbols in adjacent positions, starting with the leftmost reel to win.
There is no need to follow a set pattern on the board as there are no more paylines. A simple change, but one that makes wins drastically simpler.
Keep an eye out for the green safe icon. It can appear on the first and fifth reel. When it lands, it opens and grants a random cash prize.
The safe can also land on reels two, three and four. If that happens alongside the safe landing on the first and fifth reel, it will duplicate the coin award. The duplication affects all symbols beneath the safes on the middle three reels.
Along the same lines, we have the Piggy Bank bonus. Keep an eye out for the piggy bank appearing on the third reel.
This activates a special feature where you smash the piggy bank open to reveal the cash prize within. This bonus does not overlap with the safe bonus mentioned above. As such, both can be activated on the same turn.
Every turn has a chance of making our two robbers, Larry and Bob, appear next to the reels. They will drop off a few random cash prizes of their own as they pass you by.
Make sure to thank them! A bit of politeness may just soften Lady Luck’s heart and make the robbers appear more often.
Bust the Bank Free Spins
Find three or more Scatters to win eight free spins. During the special feature, the first and fifth reel become covered with Wild icons.
This increases your odds of landing wins, but comes at a cost. None of the bonuses we mentioned up until now can be activated during free spins.
Every Scatter that appears while the special feature is active grant one more free spin. This allows you to extend the bonus and unlock more free spins.
Where To Play Bust the Bank?
RTP, bet sizes and volatility
The RTP for this game is 96.75%. This is above the current industry average, which sits at 96%. It is doubly impressive, considering how old this title is.
You can bet between $0.30 and $300 on each spin. Players change their bet by clicking the bet field to reveal a slider.
Move the slider left and right to find a wager that suits you. We quite like this spread of bets, as it appeals to both casual players and high rollers.
Having said that, we doubt high rollers will play this release for long. It offers a medium variance and a jackpot worth 450x.
A great arrangement if you want an evening of relaxed fun with frequent bonuses. Not so much if you are hoping to win big.
There is a reason Bust the Bank is still remembered fondly to this day. The slot has plenty of small bonuses that can fire at any time.
Even if they do not bring in much, they are still a welcome addition. It helps they fire frequently to keep us entertained.
The visuals and gameplay both held up wonderfully. If you were hoping for a high stakes bank robbery, this is not it.
However, it has more than earned its 4 out of 5 stars rating. Great work, Microgaming!
