Age of the Gods Review
Fans of Playtech and progressive jackpots have no doubt heard of Age of the Gods by now. It is based around Greek mythology and has become one of the most popular progressive jackpot series.
Before it was all those things, Age of the Gods was just one game. How well does it hold up compared to all its later installments?
- Medium variance with a progressive jackpot
- Twenty fixed paylines
- Players can win four free spins and the progressive jackpot
Will you answer the call of the gods? The four supreme deities of Olympus all have their issues and need your assistance in solving them. Along the way, players will benefit from all kinds of special features.
The Pantheon of power and four free spins are all great tools to help your service to the gods. The gods may even bless the luckiest and most dedicated among us with the ultimate gift: the progressive jackpot! A tempting prize, especially when paired with a medium variance.
Theme, Graphics and Sounds
While future releases in the series would focus on one god, this title features quite a few of them. Athena, Zeus, Poseidon, Hercules, Aphrodite, and Hades take center stage here.
If you like Greek mythology, Age of the Gods is a dream come true. The big players of the Pantheon are all here. Well, everyone except Hercules, who is not a god but the son of Zeus instead. It is a fun theme and one that is backed by good visuals.
You play this slot on a five-reel, three-row board with twenty fixed paylines. Since the number of paylines is fixed, players cannot toggle individual paylines on or off to change them.
Wins are awarded by finding three or more matching symbols in adjacent positions, starting with the leftmost reel. Winning combinations must follow an active payline, or the associated cash prize will not be paid out.
First on the list of bonuses is the simplest one: the special Pantheon of power. Land the Athena, Zeus, Poseidon, Hercules, and Aphrodite icons simultaneously in any order to win a 200x cash prize. The five god symbols have to appear on an active payline to grant this reward.
Find three Scatters to activate the Age of the Gods bonus round. In the bonus round, players pick through twenty coins.
Each coin reveals Athena, Zeus, Poseidon, or Hercules. Each of those deities is associated with a free spins round. Find three god icons to activate their bonus round.
After free spins end, you are returned to the board to try and win more free spins! If Hades appears on the board, the bonus ends.
The Age of the Gods progressive jackpot is won randomly. Players are taken to a separate screen, where they pick through gold coins to win one of four jackpots.
By triggering the jackpot, you are guaranteed to win one of the four jackpots. The jackpots are ranked based on value. Every round can activate the jackpot, with higher wagers increasing your odds of triggering the bonus.
Age of the Gods Free Spins
All four gods grant their followers nine free spins.
- Athena’s free spins award a randomly assigned multiplier every round, ranging from 2x to 5x. The multiplier swaps with every free spin.
- Zeus’ free spins start with a 1x multiplier. Every three spins, Zeus increases the multiplier by one. During Zeus’ free spins, a Wild is locked in the middle position of the third reel. This Wild can substitute for all symbols except for Scatters.
- Poseidon’s free spins turn up to five icons from the board into Wilds every free spin. These Wilds have the shape of Poseidon’s spear but are functionally identical to regular Wilds.
- Hercules’s free spins feature a stacked Wild that fills the third reel during his free spins. This full-reel Wild cannot be removed and substitutes for all symbols except for Scatters. Free spins cannot be retriggered in any of the four modes.
Where To Play Age of the Gods?
RTP, bet sizes and volatility
The RTP for this game is 95.02%, with 0.99% of the RTP going towards the jackpot contribution. This is below the current industry average, which sits at 96%. However, most titles that do meet that RTP cannot offer the same payout.
You can bet between $0.20 and $40 on each spin. The top prize you can win from this Playtech release is virtually limitless.
A progressive jackpot is always attractive, and Age of the Gods is no exception. The fact it is attached to a medium variance slot is just the icing on the cake.
We expected some flaws to crop up when playing this game. Sure enough, some details could be improved. Graphics are an obvious one, as is a slightly better RTP.
However, everything else holds up quite nicely. The game has four free spins rounds, and you could potentially win all four in one go.
The progressive jackpot is just as appealing now as it was back then. As such, we rate this release 4 out of 5 stars.
