Casumo and PokerStars have received the approval to launch their service in Ontario.
The Ontario online casino licence awarded to PokerStars by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission (AGCO) will be valid through June 7, 2024. However, the licence obtained by Pret Play, Casumo’s parent company, won’t have the same validity period and will expire on June 7, 2023.
Once PokerStars finalizes its agreement with iGaming Ontario, it will be able to offer online casino, sports betting, poker, and mobile app to customers in Canada’s most populous province.
Ontario’s online gambling market has been booming since it launched on April 4. One of the most recent names to enter the market is NorthStar Bets, whose casino and sports betting platform are powered by Playtech.
All operators wanting to do business in Ontario have to cease operations until they get a licence. They risk having their application rejected if they fail to do so.
The AGCO has already shown it is ready to fine even the biggest names in the industry if they fail to adhere to the set standards.
A month after the launch of the regulated online gambling market in Ontario, BetMGM and PointsBet were fined for alleged shortcomings in advertising and bonuses. BetMGM eventually paid $48,000, while PointsBet was handed a fine of $30,000.
Scott Vanderwel, the CEO at PointsBet Canada, even apologised for his company’s failure to meet the stadards. He pointed out the operator would make sure not to cross the line again.
